Electron microscopy of ultra-thin sections of lepromatous peripheral nerves.

The submicroscopic structure of peripheral nerves are now being revealed by many investigators (1 , 2, 3, 8) using the high resolving power of the electron microscope. Stimulated by this recent progress in neurology, we have made an electron microscope study of ultra-thin sections of leprous peripheral nerves. In the present article we report on such a study of sections of great auricular nerve...

Light and electron microscopic study of peripheral nerve damage in patients with lepromatous leprosy (LL) and borderline lepromatous leprosy (BL).

Cutaneous branches of radial nerves in patients with lepromatous leprosy (LL) and borderline lepromatous (BL) were studied by light and electron microscopy. Foamy macrophages were found more or less in the nerve fibers of all leprosy patients and distributed in the epineurial, perineurial and endoneurial areas. In the endoneurium, the foamy macrophages were mainly located in the subperineurial ...

Hepatic involvement in lepromatous leprosy.

Hepatic involvement in a lepromatous leprosy (LL) patient is reported. The serum concentrations of aminotransferases were much higher than previously described in the leprosy literature. Other causes for hepatic damage were ruled out. Such hepatic involvement and elevation of aminotransferases have never been described in leprosy.

Localized borderline lepromatous leprosy.

A 48-year-old soldier presented with 3 small leprosy lesions localized over the flexor area of the forearm. There was no nerve thickening and clinically the lesions looked like borderline-tuberculoid leprosy. However, these lesions demonstrated a bacteriological index (BI) of 4+ while no acid-fast bacilli (AFB) could be demonstrated from any other site of the body. A lepromin test was negative....

Borderline lepromatous leprosy.

It is presented a case of borderline lepromatous leprosy with 4 years of evolution and cutaneous lesions of difficult diagnosis in the National Health System.
